The Bureau of Archaeology & Ethnography consists of over two million artifacts from New Jersey that cover the entire span of human occupation from prehistoric times through to the 19th century. These collections are the result of nearly 100 years of professional excavations by Museum staff and archaeologists throughout the state.
Position Description: The Archaeology Intern will create a Lithic Comparative Collection from artifacts in the New Jersey State Museum. The Intern will first create a physical collection, which they will then digitize and upload to be made available on the internet. The Intern will also be expected to contribute to the Bureau’s blog. The Archaeology Intern reports to the Bureau Registrar and will work with the Bureau’s Assistant Curator.
Education and Experience Requirements: Applicants should be an Undergrad or Graduate Student in Anthropology or Archaeology with an interest in lithics. Must have completed an archaeology field school. Database proficiency helpful. Preference will be given to students obtaining credit from their College or University.
Duties and Responsibilities may include:
- Sorting archaeological lithics by material and type
- Recording metric data and describing artifacts in Excel Spreadsheet
- Writing blog posts
- Additional provenance research where appropriate.
